"A panel of state lawmakers voted on Tuesday to advance a pilot program that would give $1,000 a year to seniors and Mainers with disabilities who receive Section 19 benefits under MaineCare to use on transportation for their non-medical needs, such as trips to the pharmacy or grocery store.

A minority of lawmakers on the Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee voted to immediately launch the pilot, modeled off a similar program run in New York. The majority of committee members voted instead for the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to conduct a feasibility study of allotting money to seniors and the disabled.

The divided committee report will next go to the Maine House of Representatives, which will decide whether to start the pilot immediately, or pursue a slower feasibility study."
