Public transportation systems in North Carolina have a long history is helping when there is a need. Public
transportation provides medical and work-related trips to everyone with special attention to with a disability
and special needs. Then there are those special circumstances where we step-up, from natural disaster
evacuations, COVID shots, and trips to the polls. But more can be done. Following a decline in ridership system
are turning to serviced markets that also provide social and health benefits to our communities. This webinar
will focus on several efforts aimed at expanding the benefits of public transportation.
Below are the webinar presenters and their topics along with links to their programs and initiatives.
Lisa Riegel, Manager of Advocacy & Livable Communities with AARP North Carolina
Lisa will discuss AARP’s Livable Communities program which supports the efforts of neighborhoods, towns,
cities, and rural areas to be great places for people of all ages. AARP believes that communities should provide
safe, walkable streets; age-friendly housing and transportation options; access to needed services; and
opportunities for residents of all ages to participate in community life.
Kristine Arnau, Program Coordinator with Age Friendly Mecklenburg
Kristine will discuss Age Friendly Mecklenburg which is an initiative that facilitates the collective planning of not-
for-profit, higher education, faith-based, private, and governmental organizations along with community
residents to improve the quality of life for older adults. The Age Friendly Mecklenburg Action Plan helps
address the needs and access to services for residents within this demographic. Establishment of the plan was
vital to Mecklenburg County’s AARP/World Health Organization certification as an Age Friendly Community.
Dr. Marilyn Dillon, Mobility Management Administrator/ADA Coordinator with EMBARK Transit
Dr. Dillon will discuss their Climb Ride program. Climb Ride provides families in the child welfare system with
comprehensive transportation options, including transportation training, incentives, and post-program support,
as participants work to complete their court-ordered services.
