The City of Iowa City announced on Wednesday that the launch of Fare Free Iowa City in August has led to a 53% increase in bus ridership compared to August of 2022, according to data collected by Iowa City Transportation staff.
During August 2023, the city's buses recorded a total of 131,420 trips, up from the 85,672 trips in August 2022, an increase of 45,748 rides.
