Cedar Rapids (IA) Nonprofit to provide free rides to Oakland Road grocery store

  • Date: 06/05/2024

Starting June 24, a Cedar Rapids nonprofit agency will provide free rides to the Oakland Road Hy-Vee for Mountain View, Oak Hill Jackson, and Wellington Heights neighborhood residents.

Hy-Vee plans to close the 1st Avenue Hy-Vee in Cedar Rapids on June 23 after the grocery store chain said the store did not meet sales goals over the past several years. Once the store closes, it will be much harder for those who live in the neighborhood around the 1st Avenue store to access a grocery store, making this area a food desert.

The closest grocery stores in Cedar Rapids are about two miles away: the Fareway on First Avenue and the Hy-Vee on Oakland Road.

Hy-Vee is funding the shuttle and partnering with Horizons Neighborhood Transportation Service in Cedar Rapids.
