Lorain County commissioners unanimously voted March 26 to adopt a countywide pilot transit project to begin in July, and it was the proper and principled thing to do.
This marks a great beginning step to getting a mass transit system for Lorain County that has longed for public transportation, especially for low-income residents who need convenient and easy services to get to their jobs and or medical appointments.
The county entered into a $2.12 million agreement with River North Transit LLC, a subsidiary of Via Transportation Inc., to provide a one-year micro-transit pilot project in the cities of Elyria and Lorain.
The contract is effective July 8, 2024, through July 7, 2025, and will be paid from the Lorain County Transit vehicle repair account.
Via will provide a turnkey solution to the county by hiring local drivers and mechanics.
Via already has between 70 and 80 micro-transit operations across the country.
