Port Authority is creating a position for a director of diversity and inclusion who will work internally on hiring and employee relations and externally on transit operations and decisions affecting customers, neighborhoods and riders.
The position is an outgrowth of Ms. Kelleman’s efforts to increase the use of minority contractors and open up the agency’s hiring process by eliminating the application question that asked whether someone has a criminal record.
The position also is a reflection of social movements in the response to the death of George Floyd in May after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck.
